Apple's latest holiday ad promotes a feature that brings AirPods users together

Apple has had its share of amazing holiday announcements. Perhaps what sticks in this writer's mind is the ad from 2013. It's the one where a whole family goes to grandma's house and one of the kids seems too focused on his iPhone instead of participating in holiday celebrations. And just when it looks like this kid is going to end up in misery, he calls the whole family to sit down in front of the TV to watch the heartwarming family video he created with his iPhone.

The father, who a few moments before seemed to abandon his son, gives him a big hug. And let's not forget the cash injection: grandma cries when she sees what her grandson has created with the iPhone. It was a brilliant commercial and you can still watch it on YouTube. If you can watch this whole video without getting in touch with your feelings, you might be a robot.

If this is Apple's 2022 holiday video, it's also a promotion of Apple's headphone audio-sharing feature

But that was then, this is now. Apple has released a new video that could not only be its holiday announcement for 2022 but also promote the Audio Sharing feature on compatible AirPods and Beats headphones. This lets you share what you're listening to with another person using any model of AirPods, including AirPods Max. All you have to do is bring the AirPods close to the iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV you're listening to, and the AirPods will instantly connect with the press of a button.

In fact, Apple's instructions are as follows:

  • Use your AirPods and make sure they're connected to your device.
  • On your device, tap the Playback Destination button on the Now Playing screen, Lock screen, or Control Center.
  • Tap Share Audio (under your headset's name).
  • Move your friend's headset closer to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  • Tap Share audio on your device.
  • Ask your friend to tap Connect on their device.

The fine print at the bottom of Apple's website says Audio Sharing "works with iPhone 8 or later and iPod touch (7th generation) with the latest version of iOS; and iPad Pro 12, 9-inch (2nd generation or later), 11-inch iPad Pro, 10.5-inch iPad Pro, iPad (5th generation or later), iPad Air (3rd generation or later), and iPad mini (5th generation or later) running the latest version of iPadOS.

Apple wants you to "share the joy" this holiday season

Now that we've settled that, let's get back to the tape. Two bored Apple AirPods Pro owners are sitting in a cafe when one decides to share their audio with the other. So let's dance while sharing the song "Puff" (by Bhavi and Bizarrap) on your AirPods Pro headphones. Besides dancing, both have a very Disney ability. They can turn things into the snow (including a car).

After jumping off a bridge, perfectly timing the jump to land on a truck that turns to snow, our heroes change five and both turn to snow. Cue the slogan: "Share the joy".

By the way, these are Apple and Beats headphones that support audio sharing:

  • AirPods (all generations).
  • AirPods Pro (all generations).
  • AirPods max.
  • Beats Fit Pro.
  • Press Flex.
  • It Beats Solo Pro.
  • Beats Solo Wireless.
  • Beats Studio Wireless.
  • Press X.
  • Power beats.
  • Power Beat Pro.
  • Wireless Powerbeats.

The second generation of AirPods Pro was released last September for $249. No, wearing them does not give you the power to turn things into the snow.
